I can’t tell you how many times I have heard this. Clients once had a site built by someone who vanished off the face of the earth. They want their site refreshed and updated but they can’t access it because A) they don’t know where it’s hosted; B) they don’t have ownership nor credentials; and C) They don’t want to get into the technical skinny on how sites work.
That’s why I always recommend clients own their domain, and clients own their hosting. I’ll work with you to recommend a hosting provider, help you get it up and running, and I’ll build your site and when we turn it over will provide everything you need in case I win the lottery and decide to move to Tierra Del Fuego.
Because after all it’s your site, not mine, nor the lost developer who doesn’t return your calls.
